Eucalyptus nitens

Common Name: Shining gum, silvertop

Distribution: New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania

General Information: Highly valued plantation timber, tolerates frost and occasional snow, fast growing. The specimen featured was seen in State Forest, Franklin, Tasmania.

Leaves: Adult leaves concolourous, up to 30cm long, petiolate, dense reticulation, oil glands obscure, margin well removed. Juvenile leaves grey/silver opposite and broad, glaucous, sessile.

Bark: Large flakes along the trunk leaving patches of lime green, cream and orange.

Fruit: Peduncle 5-14mm long, groups of 7, sessile fruits, valves 3 or 4 slightly excerted, barrel-shaped.


Inflorescences: Flowers white, occurring in Summer, flower buds sessile, angular with conical operculum.
